Hanging onto old clothes may not be such a bad thing...

There are lots of useful and attractive things that can be made out of vintage fabrics... and in times of recession, it is good for your pocket to make things, instead of spending!

And with a million tonnes of fabrics going into UK landfill each year, making do will be good for your conscience as well as your pocket.

Here are some of our ideas:

1, Make a tote bag. Sally Walton, who runs carry-a-bag.com, uses fabrics from curtains and old clothes to make her gorgeous bags. And we have found an online tutorial to help you here.

2, Make a reversible purse. Great for gifts and really stylish, these purses are a great idea if you have a small amount of fabric to spare. Find out how to make one here.

3, Fabric flower brooch. It is easy to make a gorgeous flower brooch out of small pieces of fabric. Find out how here.
