Corporal Simon Brown was shot in the face while saving six comrades in Iraq in 2006. The recovery team he commanded went to rescue a broken-down armoured vehicle in Basra. Six soldiers were trapped inside under heavy attack. While under fire, Simon got the vehicle going again.

But the resulting wound destroyed his left eye and 90% of the vision in his right eye.

Simon subsequently had to endure two years of suffering which included 100 hours of surgery.
